Former U.S. president Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016, are set to provide testimony in a congressional inquiry involving the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as confirmed by a congressional staff member on Monday. The call for the Clintons to testify stemmed from a recommendation by the Republican-led House oversight committee, accusing the Clintons of contempt for declining to discuss their association with Epstein. Despite the Clintons offering to cooperate with the panel, they had declined to appear in person, citing the investigation as a partisan effort to shield Republican President Donald Trump.
The House of Representatives had planned to take action against the Clintons for contempt later this week, potentially resulting in criminal charges. Notably, Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro, former members of Trump’s administration, faced brief jail terms in 2024 for refusing to testify before a House committee investigating Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated that the House is currently assessing the contempt votes against the Clintons, with legal teams examining the specifics. Johnson expressed satisfaction upon learning that the former president and former secretary of state had agreed to provide testimony.
Following the recent release of millions of internal documents by the U.S. Justice Department concerning Epstein, revelations emerged regarding the late financier’s connections with various influential figures in politics, finance, academia, and business. This disclosure sheds light on Epstein’s relationships both before and after his 2008 guilty plea to prostitution charges.
It would be a rare occurrence in contemporary times for a former president to testify before Congress in such a highly charged setting. To date, only Harry Truman and Gerald Ford have testified in Congress since World War II—Truman discussing the United Nations Charter and Ford addressing the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution.
Similar to Trump, Bill Clinton reportedly traveled on Epstein’s plane multiple times. Clinton has expressed remorse over their association and claimed ignorance of Epstein’s illicit activities. Representatives of Clinton stated that he severed ties with Epstein following the initial criminal charges in 2006. Additionally, Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate who is currently incarcerated, attended Clinton’s daughter Chelsea’s wedding in 2010.
Hillary Clinton’s spokesperson mentioned that she has no recollection of ever conversing with Epstein. James Comer, the Kentucky Republican who chairs the oversight committee, highlighted that the Clintons have not confirmed a deposition date, leading to discussions on the next course of action with committee members. Comer rejected an offer from the Clintons’ attorneys for Bill Clinton to undergo a transcribed interview and for Hillary Clinton to provide a sworn declaration.
Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Comer’s approach as partisan and aimed at humiliating the Clintons, asserting that the Clintons had made sincere attempts to cooperate. Democrats also raised concerns about the Justice Department withholding some of the material related to Epstein and the lack of pressure from Republican leadership to address this issue.
