National"Community Mourns 13-Year-Old Boy Killed in Dog Attack"

A community in southwestern Nova Scotia is grieving the loss of a 13-year-old boy who tragically died in a dog attack. The community gathered at a memorial service to honor the boy, known for his love of biking and generosity in sharing his lunch money with other children.

The service took place at a community center in Shelburne, N.S., where people gathered in rows of folding chairs. Flowers, photos of Drew Nickerson, and his light blue-tired bicycle were displayed at the front of the room. Rev. Shawn Hatfield expressed the community’s profound sorrow, stating that Drew’s passing has deeply impacted everyone.

The ceremony was attended by Nickerson’s family, former teachers, classmates, friends, and soccer teammates. A teacher remembered Nickerson as a kind and curious soul who always showed empathy towards others.

Parise Jeffrey, his stepmother, expressed the disbelief of having to say goodbye to Drew. An obituary highlighted Drew’s selfless nature, mentioning how he would share his lunch money with other children. Photos and videos shown during the service captured his joyful moments, including swimming and riding various vehicles.

The RCMP confirmed that the dogs involved in the attack were two Cane Corsos and a Rottweiler. Following the tragic incident, the dogs were euthanized. Drew was rushed to a hospital in Halifax after the attack but succumbed to his injuries on January 5.

A GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support Nickerson’s family, initially aiming for $40,000 but quickly raising nearly $150,000. The funeral service was filled with messages of support for the family from across Canada.

Nickerson’s soccer team, Southwest Blast FC, remembered him for his love of the sport and the positive energy he brought to every situation. The tragic incident has deeply affected the Shelburne community, with an outpouring of support for the grieving family.
