The Chicago Cubs made a significant move by adding Edward Cabrera to their pitching rotation through a trade with the Miami Marlins. In exchange for Cabrera, who had a solid performance last season, the Cubs sent outfielder Owen Caissie and infield prospects Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon to Miami.
Caissie, a young talent from Ontario, may have the opportunity to compete for a starting position with the Marlins after showing promise during his major league debut last year. On the other hand, Cabrera, who is eligible for salary arbitration, will remain with the Cubs until at least the end of the 2028 season.
With a 92-70 record last season, the Cubs secured a playoff spot but were eliminated by the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Division Series. Cabrera, 28, will bolster the Cubs’ pitching rotation, which also includes Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Cade Horton, and Jameson Taillon, among others.
Despite Cabrera’s injury concerns, including blisters and a right elbow sprain, the Cubs view him as a valuable addition to their roster. Caissie, who was expected to contribute in right field, may see increased playing time following Kyle Tucker’s potential departure in free agency.
Miami, under new manager Clayton McCullough, showed improvement last season with a 79-83 record. Meanwhile, Hernandez and De Leon, the prospects traded to Miami, performed well in their respective minor league teams last year.
