Emergency power cuts affected multiple cities in Ukraine and Moldova on Saturday due to technical issues with power lines connecting the two countries. Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal explained that a malfunction triggered a widespread power grid failure, leading to blackouts in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Kharkiv. The outage disrupted water supplies and forced the temporary suspension of the subway system in Kyiv.
Moldova also faced significant power outages, including in its capital, Chisinau. Moldova’s energy minister, Dorin Junghietu, reassured the public that efforts were underway to restore electricity and urged calm.
These power disruptions come amidst a harsh winter in Ukraine exacerbated by Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. The deliberate targeting of energy facilities by Russia has intensified the already challenging conditions for civilians, with temperatures dropping lower than usual. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine warned of extremely cold weather with temperatures plummeting to -30°C in some areas.
In response to the dire situation, U.S. President Donald Trump disclosed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to a temporary halt in strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian locations amid the severe cold snap. The White House is yet to provide details on the timeframe and extent of this pause.
Negotiations involving U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian officials are scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi next week to address the ongoing conflict. However, obstacles to reaching a peace agreement persist, including disagreements over the status of occupied Ukrainian territories.
Despite the reported pause in strikes on energy assets, President Zelenskyy expressed skepticism about Russia’s intentions, highlighting the lack of progress towards a peace settlement. The Ukrainian population remains resilient in the face of hardship, with many citizens enduring the cold and power outages while hoping for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
