Lionel Messi stirred strong emotions among football enthusiasts worldwide during what many believe could be his final game on Argentine turf for the national team. The iconic striker visibly struggled to contain his feelings before Argentina’s friendly match against Zambia at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, amidst a touching display of support from loyal fans.

The 38-year-old Inter Miami player appeared moved while standing with his teammates before the game, absorbing the chants, songs, and affection from the home crowd. A video capturing the moment showcased Messi wiping away tears, adding a poignant touch to what may be his farewell appearance in front of his local supporters.

On the field, Messi ensured a memorable night, contributing a goal and an assist in Argentina’s dominant 5-0 victory over Zambia in a farewell friendly ahead of the upcoming World Cup. The experienced forward orchestrated Julian Alvarez’s opening goal in the fourth minute and found the net himself in the 43rd minute, delighting the enthusiastic audience in Buenos Aires. Alongside Messi and Alvarez, Valentin Barco and Nicolas Otamendi also found the back of the net for Argentina.

The emotional atmosphere escalated as fans rose to honor Messi with a standing ovation, resonating chants encouraging their captain to guide Argentina to another World Cup triumph. As the tournament approaches, set to kick off on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Messi’s anticipated pivotal role in the competition added a sentimental tone to the farewell ambiance in Buenos Aires, paying homage to one of football’s greatest icons.

Before the Zambia encounter, head coach Lionel Scaloni had issued a stern warning about potential squad adjustments for the World Cup, emphasizing the need for improvement following Argentina’s lackluster performance in a narrow 2-1 victory over Mauritania. Despite concerns arising from the previous match, Argentina showcased their prowess against Zambia, reflecting a return to form.

Scaloni’s lineup for the final home game before the World Cup closely resembled the victorious squad from the 2022 final against France, with notable changes including the absence of midfielder Rodrigo De Paul due to injury recovery and recent performance concerns. Argentina, three-time World Cup champions, will kick off their Group J campaign against Algeria on June 16, followed by matches against Austria on June 22 and Jordan on June 27.
