The son of Iran’s former shah has emerged as a key figure inspiring protesters in the recent wave of anti-government demonstrations, despite residing outside Iran since the late 1970s. Reza Pahlavi, often criticized by Iranian state media as disconnected and corrupt, has utilized social media and Farsi news outlets like Iran International to amplify his calls for protests and denounce repression. He has consistently shown support for Iranians advocating for change and has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to assist the protesters.

During an interview with CBS News, Pahlavi emphasized the need for President Trump to make a prompt decision regarding the situation, expressing his willingness to play a role in supporting the Iranian demonstrators. While Trump has voiced his readiness to stand with Iranians facing violence from security forces, he has expressed uncertainty about meeting with Pahlavi.

In response to questions about his involvement in urging protests in a country known for harsh crackdowns on dissent, Pahlavi clarified that he is responding to the people’s calls for assistance in their quest for change. Despite acknowledging the risks involved in such movements, he stressed the importance of supporting the uprising.

Pahlavi, aged 65, who has not returned to Iran in many years, faces uncertainty regarding his level of support within the country. Some protesters have shown solidarity through social media videos, chanting slogans like “Long live the shah,” indicating a possible resonance with Pahlavi’s messages. While some advocate for his restoration, others demand broader political reforms and economic improvements.

Pahlavi has consistently advocated for change during periods of unrest, including past protests in 2009 and 2022. His vision includes a transition to a secular and democratic Iran, emphasizing the people’s right to choose their leaders. Despite facing challenges in garnering international support, Pahlavi remains committed to offering Iranians a path towards peace and democratic governance.
