Global automaker Stellantis has unveiled plans to introduce 11 new vehicle models in North America, creating potential manufacturing opportunities in Ontario, according to the head of the company’s Canadian division. Stellantis currently operates two assembly plants in Canada, one in Windsor producing the Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Charger, and another in Brampton, which has been inactive since 2023. Originally intended to build a Jeep model in Brampton, Stellantis shifted production to the U.S., sparking controversy in Canada regarding the significant taxpayer funding the company has received.
During an investor day event in Michigan, Stellantis outlined a comprehensive strategy to revamp its global product lineup to recover market share following recent financial challenges. Stellantis Canada President Trevor Longley emphasized the potential for new models under the Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram brands to be manufactured in Canada, with a specific focus on the Brampton facility.
Notably, Dodge is planning to introduce an entry-level performance vehicle, while Ram is developing a muscle truck and large SUV. Additionally, Jeep will introduce new models as part of the company’s extensive investment in its brand portfolio.
Stellantis is actively exploring options for the Brampton plant, which had been undergoing re-tooling for electric and gas-powered vehicles before operations ceased. Discussions are ongoing to potentially produce a new Chrysler crossover at the Brampton facility. The company’s executives expressed optimism about bringing innovative products to market but have not disclosed specific details regarding production facilities or timing.
Representatives from Stellantis and the union local representing workers at the Windsor plant have expressed interest in maximizing production capacity at Ontario facilities. Unifor Local 444 President James Stewart highlighted the importance of securing new models for Canadian plants, emphasizing the need to fully utilize existing manufacturing capabilities.
As negotiations with the automakers, including Stellantis, are set to commence ahead of the collective agreement expiration in September, discussions will focus on maximizing plant efficiency amid changing trade dynamics with the United States. Longley affirmed Stellantis’ commitment to collaborative efforts with government entities and labor unions to ensure sustainable solutions for the Brampton plant.
Longley also mentioned the possibility of the Brampton plant assembling Chinese electric vehicles through the company’s partnership with Leapmotor. The Canadian government’s decision to allow Chinese EVs into the market aligns with Stellantis’ strategic considerations for future product offerings. Ongoing discussions aim to secure production, safeguard jobs, and promote long-term investments in Canada, with a focus on enhancing the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturing in the evolving automotive landscape.
