Shiv Ratan Agarwal, the founder of Bikaji Foods International, passed away at the age of 75, signaling the end of an era for one of India’s leading packaged snack brands, as confirmed by the company in a regulatory disclosure.

Agarwal experienced discomfort and was swiftly taken to a private hospital in Chennai, where he later succumbed, according to sources familiar with the situation. His wife had recently undergone bypass surgery, leading doctors to advise him to take it easy. During this period, he had been residing in Chennai.

Recognized as a trailblazer in elevating traditional Indian snacks into a global enterprise, Agarwal played a pivotal role in elevating Bikaji to a household name. Under his stewardship, the company transitioned from a regional entity in Rajasthan to an internationally acclaimed brand renowned for its bhujia, namkeen, sweets, and ready-to-eat offerings.

“Shri Shiv Ratan Agarwal was instrumental in establishing the Company from its inception and laying the groundwork for the ‘Bikaji’ brand. His leadership has been crucial in propelling the Company towards prosperity and expansion, transforming the traditional Bikaneri snacks business into the globally recognized Bikaji brand by blending authentic flavors with contemporary business strategies. His strategic vision and adept handling of intricate challenges have significantly enhanced our operational resilience,” the company stated.

Born into the Agarwal family, known for founding the Haldiram’s empire, Agarwal was the grandson of Gangabishan ‘Haldiram’ Bhujiawala. While his siblings continued to grow the family’s established business, he embarked on his independent journey in 1986.

Commencing with Shivdeep Products and later introducing the Bikaji brand in 1993, named after Rao Bika, the founder of Bikaner, with the objective of sharing the region’s authentic flavors with a global audience.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed his deep sorrow at Agarwal’s passing, describing it as a profound loss. “Through the Bikaji brand, he brought global prominence to Bikaneri bhujia. His demise is an irreplaceable loss. I offer prayers for peace to the departed soul and strength to the grieving family,” Gehlot conveyed in a social media post.
