“GM Invests $691M in St. Catharines Plant for V-8 Engines”

Business"GM Invests $691M in St. Catharines Plant for V-8 Engines"

General Motors has announced a $691 million investment in its St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to bolster the production of its latest V-8 engines for full-sized trucks and SUVs. This move will position St. Catharines as the third facility to manufacture the sixth generation of the engine, joining Buffalo, N.Y., and Flint, Mich.

Amid concerns over the impact of U.S. government tariffs on Canada’s automotive sector, GM Canada president Jack Uppal emphasized the significance of this investment in securing St. Catharines’ role in a key vehicle program for the foreseeable future. The company has also been enhancing its Oshawa plant, which manufactures pickup trucks, even though it recently reduced its shifts from three to two.

The CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont., remains inactive following the discontinuation of its electric delivery van production last year. Trevor Longpre, Unifor Local 199 plant chair for the GM powertrain plant, expressed optimism about the investment, highlighting it as a vote of confidence in the plant and its workforce after a tumultuous year in the auto industry.

Longpre emphasized the quality of products manufactured at the plant for high-demand vehicles, indicating a positive outlook for the future. The investment signals General Motors’ long-term commitment to its presence in Canada, offering hope to the workforce, which currently includes nearly 500 active employees with around 150 workers on layoff.

Despite uncertainties stemming from trade tariffs and demands for manufacturing relocation to the U.S., Longpre viewed this development as a significant step forward, providing much-needed positivity in an industry grappling with challenges.
