Trump Threatens Ukraine Weapon Supply Cut Over Strait of Hormuz

WorldTrump Threatens Ukraine Weapon Supply Cut Over Strait of Hormuz

President Trump has issued a threat to cease weapon supplies to Ukraine in order to compel European partners to participate in a US-led initiative aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as per a report from the Financial Times. The Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the discussions, reported that Trump indicated a potential halt in support for PURL, a NATO-funded weapons procurement program for Ukraine backed by European nations, if allies did not join what he termed a “coalition of the willing.”

Tensions have escalated over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil passage blocked by Iran following actions by the US and Israel. Trump has been advocating for NATO navies to assist in reopening the strait, but several European capitals have resisted, asserting that the conflict is not their responsibility.

Reports suggest that Trump’s warning prompted urgent diplomatic efforts within NATO. Secretary-General Mark Rutte advocated for a unified statement from key members such as France, Germany, and the UK, expressing readiness to aid in ensuring safe passage through the strait. An official quoted by the Financial Times revealed that Rutte insisted on the joint statement due to Trump’s threat to withdraw support from Ukraine.

Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with NATO, accusing allies of not aligning with US interests. During a recent cabinet meeting, he criticized NATO allies, stating that while the US is committed to protecting NATO, the reciprocal support is lacking.

In a previous interview with The Telegraph, Trump mentioned considering a potential US exit from NATO, adding pressure on allies regarding their stance on Iran. When asked about the timeline for concluding the conflict, Trump mentioned a swift resolution. A White House official indicated that Trump may reiterate the view that the conflict could end within a few weeks. Trump asserted that US actions had effectively neutralized Iran’s nuclear capabilities, emphasizing that he would depart once the nuclear threat was eradicated.

Furthermore, Trump hinted at the possibility of scaling back operations within weeks without a formal agreement, while also emphasizing the potential withdrawal from NATO if European allies did not assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement to Reuters, Trump emphasized his frustration with what he perceives as insufficient backing from the alliance.
