Google has made an investment in Anthropic, a prominent player in the AI sector. The tech giant has finalized a deal to inject $10 billion into Anthropic, with the potential for an additional $40 billion based on performance metrics. This investment comes shortly after Anthropic secured a $25 billion deal with Amazon.
It’s worth noting that Google is both a competitor to Anthropic through Gemini and a critical provider of infrastructure via Google Cloud and its specialized tensor processing units (TPUs) designed for AI tasks.
Under the terms of the agreement, Google’s initial investment in Anthropic stands at $10 billion, valuing the company at $350 billion, reflecting its previous funding round’s market valuation. However, there are reports suggesting that Anthropic has received offers at valuations exceeding $800 billion.
Following the initial investment, Google retains the option to invest an additional $30 billion in Anthropic, subject to specific performance criteria, although the exact details of these criteria remain undisclosed.
Earlier this month, Anthropic announced a new partnership with Google and Broadcom for the acquisition of multiple gigawatts of next-generation TPU capacity, expected to be operational by 2027.
