Shubman Gill of the Gujarat Titans faced a penalty due to the team’s slow over rate during the IPL 2026 match against Delhi Capitals on April 8th at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. This marked the first over-rate violation for Gill’s team this season, resulting in a fine of INR 12 lakh as per Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
According to an IPL media advisory, the Gujarat Titans’ captain, Shubman Gill, was fined for the slow over rate observed during the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Shubman Gill became the second captain to receive a fine this season, following Punjab Kings’ skipper Shreyas Iyer, who had previously been penalized twice for the same over-rate infringement. Despite the penalty, Gill showcased an impressive performance, scoring a 45-ball 70 with four boundaries and five sixes, leading the Titans to a narrow one-run victory over the Capitals.
As per the IPL Code of Conduct guidelines, teams are required to complete their bowling innings within 90 minutes. For a first offense like this, the captain incurs a fine of Rs 12 lakh. Subsequent violations result in increased fines for the captain and playing XI members based on the severity of the offense.
The Gujarat Titans secured their first win of the tournament by defeating the Capitals by a close margin of one run. Gill’s quick fifty off 33 balls set the stage for the Titans to set a challenging target of 211 runs for the Capitals. Prasidh Krishna’s solid performance in the final over, defending 13 runs, ensured the Titans’ victory as they managed to dismiss Kuldeep Yadav at the striker’s end.
Looking ahead, the Gujarat Titans will aim to capitalize on their recent victory as they prepare to face Lucknow Super Giants on April 12 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
