Finnish game developer Housemarque made a splash with its 2021 release “Returnal” on the Sony PlayStation 5. The game centers around an astronaut stranded on an alien world teeming with otherworldly foes inspired by cosmic horror. Players were drawn to its challenging yet graceful combat mechanics.

Staying true to its origins, Housemarque’s latest offering, “Saros,” retains familiar elements while introducing refinements reminiscent of popular games in similar genres. This update enhances accessibility without compromising the game’s adrenaline-fueled essence.

“Saros” is far from a laid-back experience, catering to fans of Housemarque’s previous works who appreciate its signature intensity. The game’s narrative may not always follow a linear plot but immerses players in a hauntingly atmospheric world that beckons repeated exploration.

In this shapeshifting shooter, players assume the role of Arjun, an armed enforcer for the Earth mega-corporation Soltari, investigating the enigmatic planet of Carcosa. Drawing inspiration from roguelike and bullet hell genres, “Saros” challenges players to start afresh with each run, accumulating upgrades and weapons to progress.

In a nod to classic arcade shooters, “Saros” injects the bullet hell concept into a 3D space, redefining combat as a mesmerizing “bullet ballet.” Players must master the Soltari Shield to absorb enemy projectiles and charge up powerful weapons to combat formidable adversaries.

The game introduces dynamic gameplay elements like activating the eclipse, altering the environment and intensifying challenges. While the storyline takes a back seat to gameplay, “Saros” offers a compelling blend of combat and exploration with a diverse cast of characters.

Housemarque’s commitment to gameplay shines through in “Saros,” delivering a unique and immersive experience that pushes boundaries in the gaming world. The game’s release on April 30 for the Sony PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro is highly anticipated by fans of the studio’s innovative approach to game design.
