India has expressed serious concerns regarding the endangerment of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the urgent need for ensuring safe navigation and advocating for restraint and de-escalation amidst the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
During the UN General Assembly debate under the Veto Initiative on “The Situation in the Middle East,” India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, conveyed the country’s stance. Harish underscored the significance of maritime security for India’s energy and economic interests and highlighted the targeting of commercial shipping in the conflict.
Harish lamented the military attacks on commercial shipping, noting the loss of lives, including Indian seafarers, during the conflict. India strongly denounced assaults on civilian maritime activities and reiterated its stance on the importance of freedom of navigation.
Emphasizing the adherence to international law, Harish called for the restoration of normal maritime operations, stressing the need to uphold safe and unimpeded navigation and global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz. He referenced India’s continuous expression of deep concern since February 28, 2026, regarding the broader conflict in Iran and the Gulf region, advocating for restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy to mitigate tensions.
India’s intervention comes amidst heightened geopolitical tensions and apprehensions regarding disruptions to global energy supply routes via the vital Strait of Hormuz, essential for international trade. Harish reaffirmed India’s support for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
