India’s participation in the Badminton Asia Championships has suffered an early setback as the men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty has withdrawn from the competition due to Satwik’s persistent shoulder injury. The duo, who clinched the championship title in 2023, has been grappling with fitness concerns in recent weeks, having previously pulled out of the Swiss Open before their quarterfinal match. Coach Tan Kim Her confirmed that Satwik’s shoulder pain has led to their decision to sit out of the tournament.
With the absence of Rankireddy and Shetty, the focus now shifts to India’s singles players, notably Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu. Sen, in particular, eyes more than just a chance to win a trophy at the tournament. He aims to end India’s longstanding men’s singles gold drought at the continental level, dating back to 1965. Coming off a runner-up finish at the All England Championships, Sen is geared up to commence his campaign against Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong, carrying a blend of form and expectations into the competition.
Meanwhile, Sindhu makes her return following disruptions during the European leg of the tour. The two-time Olympic medalist faced travel challenges en route to the All England Championships due to the West Asia conflict and subsequently skipped the Swiss Open for recovery. She is set to kick off her campaign against Wong Ling Ching from Malaysia.
The men’s singles category will witness the comeback of HS Prannoy post his recovery from a shoulder injury, with Kidambi Srikanth and Ayush Shetty also gearing up for their respective challenges. The women’s singles events will feature matches involving Unnati Hooda, Tanvi Sharma, and Malvika Bansod against their opponents from Thailand and Malaysia. Despite the absence of key players in the doubles categories, Indian pairs will compete across various disciplines.
As Satwik and Chirag’s exit leaves a void, India’s hopes now rest on its singles stars, especially Lakshya Sen, who stands at the cusp of a significant opportunity intertwined with historical significance.
