“India’s Condom Industry Faces Crisis Amid Supply Shortages”

Business"India's Condom Industry Faces Crisis Amid Supply Shortages"

India’s condom manufacturing industry, worth Rs 8,170 crore, is facing a supply chain crisis due to the escalating conflict in West Asia. This crisis has led to shortages and an expected 50% increase in retail prices. The disruption in maritime trade routes and the scarcity of essential petrochemical supplies and lubricants have directly impacted production, causing increased costs for manufacturers.

Major companies like HLL Lifecare Ltd, Mankind Pharma Ltd, and Cupid Ltd, which collectively produce over 400 crore condoms annually, are struggling with these challenges. The shortage of silicone oil, crucial for lubrication, and the expected price surge in ammonia, essential for stabilizing raw latex, have created market uncertainty. Additionally, rising packaging material costs have further inflated production expenses.

The high-volume, low-margin business model of India’s condom market, catering to its vast population of 140 crore, is now facing strain. Supply constraints, price fluctuations in materials like PVC foil and aluminum foil, and logistics disruptions have hindered production and order fulfillment.

The inter-ministerial briefing on March 11 highlighted the unpredictability of manufacturing costs, with domestic petrochemical units potentially facing a 35% reduction in resource allocation to prioritize fuel and energy needs. This could worsen the supply situation for manufacturers.

Experts warn that the crisis could have significant public health implications, as condoms are integral to family planning and preventing sexually transmitted infections. A decline in usage due to higher prices or limited availability could lead to long-term social consequences. Some pharmacies in major cities like Mumbai and Delhi have already reported irregular condom supplies, indicating the early impacts of the crisis.
