Moh Ahmed Leads Team Canada at Cross-Country Worlds

SportsMoh Ahmed Leads Team Canada at Cross-Country Worlds

Moh Ahmed, a seasoned track competitor for almost two decades, has always been fascinated by the collaborative nature of cross-country running. During his junior year at the University of Wisconsin, the then 19-year-old played a crucial role in securing the 2011 NCAA title for the Badgers, earning All-American recognition four times.

Reflecting on his career, the now 35-year-old Ahmed considers the 2011 NCAA title as a pinnacle achievement. In 2021, he made history by becoming Canada’s first Olympic 5,000-meter medalist, clinching a silver in Tokyo. Additionally, he boasts accolades such as being a five-time NCAA All-American in track and securing the Big Ten outdoor conference championship in 2010 and 2012.

Inducted into the University of Wisconsin Hall of Fame in September last year, Ahmed is gearing up for his upcoming challenge as he leads Canada in the men’s senior 10-kilometer race at the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida.

Ahmed, hailing from St. Catharines, Ontario, will be accompanied by fellow athletes Xavier Perras-Phaneuf, Santiago Gaitan, Matt Talbot, Evan Burke, and Philippe Morneau-Cartier at the starting line. In a recent national championship held in London, Ahmed secured his first grass event title, showcasing his prowess in the open men’s 10K.

The competition in Tallahassee will witness athletes from 20 countries competing in various races, with Canada fielding teams in multiple categories, including women’s senior 10K, men’s U20 8K, women’s U20 6K, and mixed 4x2K relay. The event marks a significant milestone as Tallahassee hosts the championships for the first time since 1992.

Ahmed’s journey to the cross-country worlds is not without challenges, as he navigates renegotiating his Nike contract and overcomes past injuries. Despite setbacks, Ahmed remains resilient, focusing on his future endeavors and potential participation in the marathon event at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

As the stage is set for the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships in Tallahassee, Ahmed and his teammates are prepared to showcase their talents and compete against a formidable field of international athletes. The redesigned course, featuring elements symbolic of Tallahassee and Florida, promises a thrilling and challenging race experience for all participants.
