Indian cricket enthusiasts have a new reason to celebrate as plans are in motion to construct a massive cricket stadium with a capacity of 100,000 in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), under the leadership of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The project, a joint effort between CIDCO and the Mumbai Cricket Association, aims to enhance the state’s sports infrastructure by establishing one of the largest cricket stadiums globally. Discussions spearheaded by MCA President Ajinkya Naik and CIDCO Managing Director Vijay Singhal have set the groundwork for this ambitious venture.
The proposed stadium is expected to divert attention from the renowned Wankhede Stadium, known for iconic moments like MS Dhoni’s winning six in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final. Currently, Wankhede accommodates just over 33,000 spectators, while the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, boasts a capacity exceeding 130,000. Apart from Wankhede, Mumbai houses the CCI-Brabourne Stadium with a capacity of around 50,000, and the MMR region features the DY Patil Stadium, the venue for the Indian women’s team’s historic World Cup victory.
“A 100,000-seater stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will not only enhance Mumbai cricket but also establish Maharashtra prominently on the global sports landscape,” remarked Naik.
The stadium project aims to nurture budding talent, bolster grassroots cricket, and provide a top-tier platform for athletes. It is envisioned to host international matches along with prestigious domestic and international tournaments. Naik highlighted, “This cutting-edge infrastructure will unlock unprecedented opportunities for player development, offer crucial exposure to emerging talent, and fortify the cricketing ecosystem across all tiers.”
Additionally, the stadium is anticipated to catalyze sports tourism, create employment opportunities, bolster the region’s global sports presence, enhance fan experiences significantly, and support comprehensive urban development in the area.
