The inaugural World team for the upcoming NBA All-Star Game appears to be a powerhouse. The fate of LeBron James’ consecutive streak of All-Star appearances will now be determined by coaches or possibly Commissioner Adam Silver.
Among the players announced as starters for the All-Star Game to be held at the home arena of the Los Angeles Clippers in Inglewood, California, are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City, Giannis Antetokounmpo of Milwaukee, Nikola Jokic of Denver, Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Victor Wembanyama of San Antonio. These players are expected to join the World team, which will compete against two U.S. teams under the NBA’s revised midseason format.
The NBA unveiled ten starters, evenly split between the two conferences. Stephen Curry of Golden State, Jalen Brunson of New York, Cade Cunningham of Detroit, Tyrese Maxey of Philadelphia, and Jaylen Brown of Boston are likely to represent the U.S. squads in the three-team round-robin tournament on February 15. The tournament will consist of 12-minute mini-games, with the top two teams advancing to a championship game.
Expressing his excitement about the All-Star nod, Gilgeous-Alexander mentioned that playing in the All-Star Game holds a special place for him, reminiscent of his childhood dreams of participating in such events. The selection of starters was determined through a weighted formula, with fan voting accounting for 50%, votes from a panel of broadcasters and reporters for 25%, and NBA players’ votes for the remaining 25%.
Fan voting saw Doncic receive the highest number of votes at around 3.4 million, followed by Antetokounmpo with approximately 3.2 million votes. Wembanyama and Anthony Edwards of Minnesota tied for the fifth starter spot in the Western Conference, with Wembanyama securing the nod due to higher fan votes.
The concept of a U.S. versus World matchup had been discussed for years before being implemented this season. The NBA, in collaboration with the National Basketball Players Association, introduced the plan to generate renewed interest in the game, with national pride at stake amid the timing coinciding with the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
The All-Star events, like the Olympics in the United States, will be broadcast on NBC’s networks. The format of the games will feature three teams with a minimum of eight players each, playing one standard NBA quarter of 12 minutes.
In a departure from the traditional All-Star Game setup, where two teams with 12 players each compete, the tournament format will see three teams with eight players on each side. This means that at least 15 players will start a game in the All-Star tournament, guaranteeing unexpected starters on February 15.
LeBron James, for the first time in 22 years, was not selected as a starter. His streak of 20 consecutive All-Star Game appearances continued last season, but his string of injuries prevented his participation. He remains eligible for selection as a reserve, with coaches set to decide the final 14 spots. Additionally, James may receive an invitation as an injury replacement if needed, with Commissioner Silver having the authority to make such selections.
As the NBA legend embarks on his 23rd season, having recently missed several games due to injuries, his eligibility for postseason accolades like All-NBA honors may be impacted. Despite his remarkable career, James’ streak of 1,297 consecutive regular-season games with at least 10 points came to an end last December, emphasizing the challenges he faces in maintaining his illustrious track record.
