“Nothing Surges, Google Rises: India’s Smartphone Market Shifts”

Technology"Nothing Surges, Google Rises: India's Smartphone Market Shifts"

India’s smartphone market is experiencing a mix of dynamics with new launches and a dip in demand. According to Counterpoint Research, smartphone shipments in India declined by 3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, marking the weakest Q1 in six years. However, amidst this slowdown, certain brands are making significant progress, with Nothing being one of them.

Nothing, including CMF, witnessed a remarkable 47% year-on-year growth in Q1 2026, positioning itself as the fastest-growing smartphone brand in the country. This growth is attributed to the brand’s expanded offline presence and the opening of its first exclusive retail store in India, enhancing visibility and accessibility.

The introduction of the Phone 4a series has also contributed to Nothing’s success, garnering positive reception from users for its unique design and appeal to young consumers eager for innovative designs.

This growth is not accidental but a result of Nothing’s deliberate strategy tailored for the Indian market. The brand aims to engage with the community and establish a deeper brand understanding, as highlighted by co-founder Akis Evangelidis during the Bengaluru flagship store launch earlier this year.

In a similar vein, Google is quietly gaining traction in the premium smartphone segment in India. While Vivo, Samsung, and Oppo lead in terms of shipments, Google has emerged as the fastest-growing premium brand (above Rs 45,000) due to its Pixel range and emphasis on AI-driven features.

Google’s success is not solely due to hardware or branding but also stems from its comprehensive strategy in India. The Pixel Upgrade Programme, offering no-cost EMIs starting at Rs 3,333 per month, aims to make premium devices more accessible and retain users within the Pixel ecosystem.

As Nothing and Google flourish, the broader smartphone market in India is witnessing a slowdown attributed to various factors like rising memory prices, currency fluctuations, and overall cost pressures leading to higher smartphone prices, particularly in the entry-level segment.

Users are becoming more cautious, opting to retain their devices longer due to extended software support cycles and enhanced device durability, reducing the frequency of upgrades.

In conclusion, while Nothing and Google capitalize on market opportunities with strategic approaches, the broader market slowdown reflects shifting consumer behaviors and market conditions in the Indian smartphone landscape.
