Actor Shia LaBeouf was put on probation after admitting to assaulting three individuals outside a bar in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. LaBeouf is required to participate in an alcohol rehabilitation program as part of the sentence issued by an Orleans Parish judge. Known for his roles in films like “Transformers” and “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull,” LaBeouf had been released on bail following the incident near the French Quarter.
Footage of the February 17 altercation shows LaBeouf pushing one person to the ground and striking another, potentially causing injury. According to a police report, LaBeouf used homophobic language during the incident and upon arrest. The actor pleaded guilty to three counts of simple battery.
The judge in Orleans Parish sentenced LaBeouf to a suspended six-month jail term and two years of probation. Additionally, LaBeouf is prohibited from contacting the victims or returning to the bar. LaBeouf’s attorney stated that he takes responsibility for his actions during the “minor Mardi Gras bar scuffle” and denied any bias or prejudice motive.
Orleans Parish district attorney Jason Williams confirmed that the victims supported the plea deal offered to LaBeouf. One of the individuals attacked by LaBeouf, identified as Jeffrey Damnit, expressed hope that the actor’s behavior would improve after undergoing substance abuse treatment. Damnit’s attorney emphasized the importance of equal treatment and safety for all individuals in New Orleans.
Following his arrest in February, LaBeouf was ordered to undergo drug and alcohol rehabilitation. In an interview, he denied having a drinking problem and attributed his aggressive behavior to anger and ego rather than alcohol. LaBeouf also made controversial remarks about his discomfort around gay individuals.
LaBeouf, who converted to Catholicism a few years ago, has a history of legal issues, including arrests for assault and public drunkenness. In 2020, he faced charges of battery and theft in Los Angeles. He also settled a lawsuit with singer FKA Twigs, accusing him of physical and emotional abuse during their relationship.
LaBeouf rose to fame as a child actor on the Disney Channel show “Even Stevens.”
