This enforcement action targets both individual ticket brokers and major companies like StubHub and SeatGeek operating in the secondary ticket market.
The new rule, embedded in Ontario’s provincial budget, aims to prevent the resale of tickets at prices exceeding their initial purchase value. In response, FIFA has removed resale World Cup tickets for upcoming Toronto events, while Ticketmaster has adjusted its platform to prevent tickets from being listed above face value.
Despite the crackdown, some companies continue to list tickets above face value. For instance, StubHub displays ticket prices significantly higher than face value during checkout, while SeatGeek lists tickets at elevated prices compared to Ticketmaster. These companies have stated their commitment to complying with the regulations, acknowledging the need for adjustments to adhere to the law.
Regarding compliance challenges, discussions are ongoing between companies like StubHub and the government to clarify the application of price caps to pre-existing listings. StubHub is working to address discrepancies in pricing and ensure compliance with the regulations.
Minister Crawford emphasized the importance of companies swiftly aligning with the new rules, with enforcement actions planned if violations persist. While the transition to compliance may take time, stakeholders like Frank Mulqueen from Viagogo emphasize the need for clarity and cooperation to meet regulatory standards.
As the industry adapts to the changes, managing director Vass Bednar highlighted the gradual nature of policy shifts and the importance of effective enforcement to curb ticket resale practices that exploit consumers. Despite concerns about potential black market activities, experts anticipate that the new regulations will curtail excessive ticket resale practices, promoting fairer transactions within the ticketing ecosystem.
