“Pakistan’s Mediation Efforts in US-Iran Conflict Backfire”

World"Pakistan's Mediation Efforts in US-Iran Conflict Backfire"

Pakistan recently took on a crucial role as a mediator in the conflict between the United States and Iran, leveraging its relationships with both nations and its vested interest in ensuring safe passage for its oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. However, this mediation effort seems to have backfired, with Iran refusing to engage in talks with any US delegation on Pakistani soil, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

By stepping into the mediation role while having a defense pact with Saudi Arabia, a country in conflict with Iran, Pakistan appeared to have unsettled both sides – Iran and its Gulf allies. This move has reportedly displeased Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, with strained ties with Pakistan, has demanded the immediate repayment of a $3.5 billion loan.

Ultimately, Pakistan’s strategy of trying to appease all parties in the high-stakes conflict seems to have alienated everyone involved. Geopolitical analyst Daniel Bordman noted, “It seems like Pakistan has massively overplayed their hand.”

In contrast, India has maintained a cautious approach amid the conflict, diversifying its crude oil sources and safeguarding its energy interests without getting entangled in mediation roles. Pakistan’s attempt to mediate in the US-Iran talks was seen as a setback for India, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasizing India’s stance on not engaging in geopolitics as a broker.

Despite acting as a messenger between the US and Iran by conveying proposals and counteroffers, Pakistan has not been successful in bringing the two parties to the negotiation table. Iran has distanced itself from Pakistan’s mediation efforts, highlighting a growing trust deficit. Plans for a meeting between Iranian officials and US Vice President JD Vance in Islamabad fell through, indicating a deadlock in peace efforts.

The breakdown in mediation has left peace efforts uncertain, prompting other potential mediators like Turkey and Egypt to explore alternative venues for hosting talks. The strained relations with Iran and the economic challenges faced by Pakistan, coupled with demands for loan repayments, have underscored the complexities of its diplomatic and economic predicament.

As Pakistan grapples with the aftermath of its failed mediation bid and the repercussions of strained international relations, it faces a diplomatic quagmire and economic pressures that highlight the limitations of its influence in the region.
