However, Judge Matthew Nicklin stated in his ruling summary that the claimants needed concrete evidence to prove that the published information had been unlawfully sourced, highlighting that mere suspicion was insufficient.
In response to the ruling, Prince Harry expressed disappointment, calling it a whitewash that was not unexpected. The publisher, Associated Newspapers, dismissed the claims as smears and hailed the decision as a significant victory for the Daily Mail and its journalists.
This lawsuit was the final one in a series of legal battles that Prince Harry had initiated against tabloid publishers for using unlawful tactics. In a statement, Harry referenced his partial victories in previous cases and emphasized the contrasting judgment in this latest ruling.
The case also involved Rupert Murdoch-led News Group in the UK, which issued a formal apology to Prince Harry for phone hacking and privacy breaches. Despite allegations of unlawful information gathering from 1996 to 2011, the court had dismissed claims of a secret agreement between Murdoch’s group and Buckingham Palace to prevent royal lawsuits.
Prince Harry’s ongoing battle against tabloids has been part of his broader efforts to address press intrusion, a subject he has been vocal about due to the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997. The legal dispute with the Daily Mail and other publishers has unveiled personal rifts within the Royal family, with King Charles reportedly opposing Harry’s litigation efforts.
