Shreyas Iyer Injured During Punjab Kings’ IPL Opener

SportsShreyas Iyer Injured During Punjab Kings' IPL Opener

Punjab Kings’ skipper Shreyas Iyer maintained a cautious stance following a hand injury sustained during their IPL 2026 opening match against Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur. Despite the injury scare, Punjab Kings secured a narrow three-wicket victory. Iyer took a blow on the wrist while at the non-striker’s end during the chase, causing concern among the team as physiotherapists rushed to attend to him. Despite the discomfort, Iyer continued briefly before getting dismissed, while Punjab Kings managed to stay composed and complete a tense chase.

In a subsequent update on his injury, Iyer remained guarded, refraining from making definitive statements about his condition. He mentioned, “I would say it is nice. It is the same as it was before. Don’t want to jinx it, hopefully everything will come out all right.” This cautious approach stems from recent setbacks, with the Punjab Kings’ captain having recently returned to action after a prolonged injury layoff that disrupted his form and match fitness.

The victory for Punjab Kings was spearheaded by debutant Cooper Connolly, who played a crucial innings of 72 runs off 44 balls under pressure. Stepping in during a challenging phase, the young Australian showcased composure and clean hitting to steer the chase. His ability to read deliveries early and take on quality bowlers, including a remarkable backfoot six off Rashid Khan, garnered praise from his captain, Iyer.

Praising Connolly’s performance, Iyer highlighted the significance of the young player’s contributions in managing the chase despite losing wickets at the other end. The Punjab Kings’ bowlers set the foundation for the victory, with Yuzvendra Chahal (2/28) and Vijaykumar Vyshak (3/34) delivering crucial spells. Iyer commended Vyshak’s temperament, labeling him as a “big match player” capable of delivering in crucial moments.

Looking ahead, Punjab Kings will face a quick turnaround with their next match against Chennai Super Kings on April 3 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Iyer’s fitness will be closely monitored, particularly given his recent return from a spleen injury that sidelined him for an extended period last year. As Punjab Kings aim to build momentum early in the tournament, they will hope that Iyer’s latest injury concern proves to be minor to maintain their positive start.

The team’s adaptation to the playing conditions and Iyer’s observations on Gujarat Titans’ aggressive field placements further highlighted the strategic aspects of the match. With a focus on maintaining momentum and Iyer’s recovery, Punjab Kings aim to continue their winning streak in the IPL 2026 season.
