A recent study conducted by a team of researchers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan has revealed that a widely used fertilizer is causing significant harm to freshwater bodies in the Canadian Prairies. The fertilizer, urea, is crucial for feeding a large portion of the global population, but its impact on aquatic ecosystems has been largely overlooked.

The study, led by Cale Gushulak, an assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, involved adding urea to farm ponds in Saskatchewan to mimic the effects of agricultural fertilization in the region. The researchers observed a tenfold increase in algae growth in the ponds, leading to oxygen depletion and detrimental effects on water quality.

According to Gushulak, the excessive use of urea is contributing to oxygen loss in surface waters, resulting in fish mortality, increased toxin exposure, and the proliferation of harmful algae blooms. The study suggests that nearly half of the lakes, wetlands, and reservoirs in the Prairie region could be degraded due to decades of urea application.

The findings also indicate that agricultural areas in China and the United States are similarly at risk of damage from urea use. While simply discontinuing the use of fertilizers like urea is not a viable solution, Gushulak emphasizes the importance of implementing better fertilizer practices to prevent contamination of water bodies.

Asim Biswas, a professor at the University of Guelph, acknowledges the significance of the study but highlights the need to consider the interaction of urea with existing phosphorus levels in water ecosystems. He cautions against overstating the impact of urea on entire ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of balanced assessments.

Gushulak warns that if urea continues to infiltrate freshwater bodies, water quality could deteriorate, leading to increased costs and potential water scarcity. As climate patterns shift, the Prairies may experience greater water level fluctuations, impacting water security and resource availability.

The study challenges the perception of Canada as a country abundant in freshwater, highlighting the critical need to address water quality issues to safeguard ecosystems and ensure water sustainability for future generations.
