American golf icon Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday his decision to take a break from the sport to concentrate on his well-being. This move follows his recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence after a car accident in Florida.
Last week, Woods, a 15-time major champion, was involved in a rollover crash near his residence in Jupiter Island. Despite being taken into custody and later released on bail, no injuries were reported in the incident.
In a social media post, Woods acknowledged the gravity of the situation and expressed his intention to step away for treatment and health focus. He emphasized the need to prioritize his recovery for long-term well-being.
Court documents revealed that Woods pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges and requested a jury trial. While his next court appearance is set for May 5, his presence is not mandated before the trial.
Reports from the investigation indicated that Woods admitted to distractions like using his phone and adjusting the radio before the crash, failing to notice a slowing vehicle ahead. Authorities noted signs of impairment at the scene, including Woods appearing lethargic and unsteady.
Additionally, prescription medication was found on Woods, and he admitted to taking medication earlier that day. This incident occurred shortly after Woods had returned to competitive golf following an injury hiatus, participating in the TGL Finals, a less physically demanding format.
Woods had been eyeing a comeback at the upcoming Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. However, following his announcement, the club confirmed his absence from the event, with chairman Fred Ridley expressing support for Woods’ focus on his well-being.
In his statement, Woods reaffirmed his dedication to returning in improved health and focus, while requesting privacy during this challenging time.
