Stubbs sought to change his gloves mid-over, citing the excessively wet conditions in Chennai. Despite his plea, the on-field umpires denied the request, citing regulations concerning play delays.
The South African player was visibly discontent with the decision. Struggling to regain momentum, Stubbs was eventually dismissed in the final stages of the chase. His discontent was evident as he exchanged words with the umpire, dropped his bat near the steps, and expressed frustration by hitting his helmet.
In response to the incident, there was apparent concern in the dugout as Nitish Rana and head coach Hemang Badani engaged with the fourth umpire for clarification.
The regulations governing such instances revolve around time-wasting. As per IPL playing conditions, batters are required to be prepared when the bowler is ready to deliver, with any delays subject to penalties. There is no provision allowing a batter to change equipment during an over if it disrupts play.
In the match, Chennai Super Kings set a formidable total of 212 for two after being put in to bat. Ayush Mhatre provided crucial support with a fluent 59, contributing to a 113-run partnership for the second wicket.
Despite a strong start in the chase by Delhi Capitals, reaching 61 in the powerplay courtesy of KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka, frequent wickets hampered their progress. Stubbs fought valiantly with a score of 60, but his dismissal marked a turning point. Chennai Super Kings bowled out Delhi for 189, securing a 23-run victory, their first of the season.
