A man facing charges for the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staff members in Washington, D.C., last year has been indicted on four new terrorism-related counts, as revealed in a fresh indictment made public on Wednesday.
The additional charges, totaling nine, encompass hate crimes and were previously filed. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia stated that some of these charges carry severe penalties of either death or life imprisonment.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro emphasized that the new terrorism charges mandate a life sentence under D.C. law, underscoring the heinous nature of the act as an act of terror.
The accused, Elias Rodriguez, aged 31, allegedly opened fire on attendees leaving an event organized by the American Jewish Committee, targeting young professionals and diplomats. During the incident, he discharged around 20 rounds from a semi-automatic handgun and proclaimed “Free Palestine,” according to prosecutors.
The victims, Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, both affiliated with the Israeli Embassy in Washington, tragically lost their lives in the attack.
Despite the unfolding events, Rodriguez’s legal representatives have not issued any statements thus far. The FBI assistant director in charge of the Washington field office, Darren B. Cox, highlighted that Rodriguez had penned and shared a manifesto intending to rationalize his deeds morally and incite others to engage in political violence.
The shooting, universally condemned by leaders, occurred amidst societal divisions and student demonstrations in the U.S. concerning the conflict in Gaza.
The conflict in Gaza, initiated by Israel in response to a Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, resulted in significant casualties, with over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals reportedly killed. In the subsequent ground operation in Gaza, following the initial attack, more than 470 Israeli soldiers lost their lives.
On the Palestinian side, Gaza health authorities reported that over 70,000 Palestinians have perished since the events of Oct. 7, 2023.
