U.S. President Donald Trump took action on Monday by signing a proclamation to adjust the national security tariffs under Section 232 for certain aluminum, steel, and copper imports, as announced by the White House. These changes will go into effect on June 8, with tariffs on specific steel and aluminum derivative products, such as select agricultural machinery and residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, being reduced from 25 per cent to 15 per cent.
According to the new order, certain mobile industrial equipment like bulldozers and forklifts will now face a 15 per cent tariff when imported from trade deal countries that qualify for such treatment, as stated by the White House. Additionally, foreign companies can benefit from a 10 per cent tariff if their capital equipment consists of at least 85 per cent U.S. melted and poured or smelted and cast steel or aluminum by weight.
Under the updated regulations, two new categories of steel and aluminum derivative import products, namely steel racks and aluminum lithographic plates, will be subjected to 25 per cent duties. These adjustments will be enforced for goods brought into the country or released from bonded warehouses after 12:01 a.m. ET on June 8.
The modifications are set to remain in effect until December 31, 2027, with the aim of encouraging immediate investments to bolster the nation’s industrial foundation, according to the White House.
