The altercation occurred during conflicting events on campus, with Andy Lin expressing frustration at the disruption caused by the opposing group.
On January 20, OneBC Leader Dallas Brodie had announced an event at the UBC Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, emphasizing the importance of open discussions. This led to a clash between OneBC supporters and protesters, with Frances Widdowson criticizing UBC for allegedly promoting misinformation about unmarked graves.
Dallas Brodie, who regained her position as party leader following an internal dispute, is now the sole MLA for OneBC. The party was founded in March 2025 after Brodie was expelled from the B.C. Conservative Party for disparaging remarks towards former residential school students.
As tensions escalated, UBC intervened and directed OneBC supporters to leave for safety reasons, supported by a security plan involving RCMP and community stakeholders. One supporter was briefly arrested but released without charges, while the rest moved through campus before being instructed to depart by RCMP.
TransLink cooperated in facilitating the departure of the group from campus, with both OneBC supporters and counter-rally attendees recording the event on their smartphones. Chants of “get off our campus” accompanied the departure of the bus carrying Dallas Brodie and her supporters.
Despite the chaos, Dallas Brodie remained optimistic, stating that the event had proceeded smoothly. She emphasized the need for Canadians to witness such incidents and understand the prevailing circumstances.
