In Canada today, the spotlight shines on the 2026 Sobey Art Award finalists as the latest selection showcases a diverse mix of contemporary artistry. Unveiled by the Sobey Art Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada, the shortlist features six artists hailing from different regions.

The nominees for the 2026 Sobey Art Award include Melaw Nakehk’o from the Circumpolar region, Samuel Roy-Bois from the Pacific region, Audie Murray from the Prairies region, Lotus L. Kang from the Ontario region, Caroline Monnet from the Quebec region, and Shane Perley-Dutcher from the Atlantic region. These artists engage in various artistic mediums such as textile art, sculpture, installation, and filmmaking, reflecting their diverse backgrounds and influences. Notably, four out of the six finalists draw inspiration from their Indigenous heritage in their creative endeavors.

Jonathan Shaughnessy, chair of the Sobey Art Award jury, commended this year’s shortlisted artists for their innovative approaches and profound connections to personal, cultural, and material histories. The winner of the $100,000 grand prize will be announced on November 14 at the NGC in Ottawa, following deliberations by an independent jury of curators and gallery professionals.

Prior to the winner’s reveal, a group exhibition showcasing the finalists’ works will be on display at the NGC starting from September 4. Last year’s recipient of the award was Tania Willard, known for her land-based art practice. The Sobey Art Award, established in 2002, aims to amplify Canada’s diverse artistic voices and perspectives, with the age restriction being lifted in 2021 to provide a platform for artists of all ages.
