Rory Linkletter expressed that Houston is his go-to destination for achieving speedy runs, as he set a new Canadian record over 21.1 kilometers during a brisk Sunday morning race. Completing the Houston Half Marathon in an impressive 59 minutes and 49 seconds, Linkletter became the first Canadian to break the one-hour mark, surpassing the previous record held by Cam Levins by 69 seconds.

Reflecting on his achievement, Linkletter shared with CBC Sports that breaking the 60-minute barrier held significant meaning for him. He emphasized the importance of being the first Canadian to achieve this feat, highlighting how it aligns with his marathon journey. Linkletter described Houston as a place where he excels in fast-paced running, making it a special stage for his performances.

Meanwhile, Levins, hailing from Black Creek, B.C., finished the race in 1:00:58, securing the 18th position among 6,776 male participants. Linkletter, originally from Calgary, placed seventh and marked his second time in four years setting a new national record in Houston.

Linkletter’s history-making run in Houston follows his previous achievements in the city, including his 2022 performance where he ran 1:01:08 to surpass Jeff Schiebler’s 1999 Tokyo record. Emphasizing the competitive nature of the race, Linkletter stated that the unpredictable elements added to the thrill, and he appreciated the course’s rhythmic layout.

In a show of sportsmanship, Linkletter and Levins exchanged words after the race, with Levins graciously congratulating his record-breaking counterpart. Acknowledging Levins’ influence on his career, Linkletter expressed gratitude for the inspiration and motivation provided by the former record holder.

Looking ahead, Linkletter mentioned plans to participate in upcoming races, including another half marathon in the spring and two marathons to be announced soon. Additionally, he aims to compete at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen in September. In recent years, Linkletter has consistently demonstrated his prowess in marathon competitions, achieving top-10 finishes in major events such as the Chicago Marathon.

On a separate note, Erin Mawhinney from Hamilton showcased her talent at the Houston Marathon by securing a fifth-place finish among elite women runners. Setting a new personal best time of 2:29:36, Mawhinney’s performance highlighted her progress and determination in the racing scene.

In the realm of cross-country running, Moh Ahmed faced a setback at the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships due to hamstring cramping, despite overcoming previous calf injuries. The Canadian runner expressed disappointment at having to withdraw from the race early.

Furthermore, Vancouver’s Kieran Lumb made headlines by setting a new Canadian road racing record at the 10 km Valencia Ibercaja by Kiprun event in Spain. His impressive time of 27 minutes and 50 seconds marked a significant achievement in Canadian road racing history.

These recent developments underscore the continued success and resilience of Canadian athletes across various disciplines, showcasing their dedication and competitive spirit on the global stage.
