Members of the Canadian Armed Forces have arrived in a First Nation community in northern Manitoba to assist with severe water issues. Pimicikamak Cree Nation Chief David Monias welcomed the arrival of seven military members after advocating for federal intervention. The team’s first task is to evaluate a malfunctioning water treatment plant and determine the necessary repairs and resources. Additional military personnel from the Joint Operational Support Group in Kingston are scheduled to join the mission, with the expectation of a two-week deployment.
The community, located 530 kilometers north of Winnipeg, faced a prolonged power outage that resulted in frozen water systems and other infrastructure damage. Approximately 4,400 residents were relocated, while 2,000 individuals remained behind, dealing with property damage and utility issues. Chief Monias highlighted the extensive repairs needed for over 1,300 homes, ranging from minor fixes to major structural damage.
Plumbers and workers from outside the province are en route to provide assistance with water and electrical challenges. Plans are in place to establish temporary camps to accommodate the influx of support teams. Additionally, a U.S. company has offered to send a portable water treatment facility to aid in the recovery efforts.
Premier Wab Kinew expressed support for the military deployment and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts during the recovery phase. Community leaders are coordinating efforts to provide educational materials to displaced residents and those remaining in the area. Despite the challenges faced by the community, Kinew pledged to address long-term solutions, including potential relocation of the power line.
The community, which has previously experienced evacuations due to wildfires, is grappling with the emotional toll of repeated displacements. Local officials are working to address the immediate needs of residents, including those temporarily housed in Thompson. As the recovery process unfolds, the focus remains on restoring essential services and infrastructure to support the community’s well-being.
