The Kolkata Knight Riders are still in search of their first victory in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, facing the possibility of extended wait due to non-cricketing factors. Having suffered defeats against the Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, KKR is now bracing for the looming threat of rain ahead of their third match scheduled for Monday, April 5.
Under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, Kolkata Knight Riders are gearing up to challenge the Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, who were last year’s finalists. Although this early-season matchup holds significance, attention might swiftly shift to the weather conditions, which could significantly impact the game.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a high likelihood of rain during the match timeframe, with the region expected to witness Kalbaishakhi storms. The IMD forecasts indicate a surge in rainfall intensity on Tuesday and Wednesday, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail.
AccuWeather also warns of potential disruptions, with a 51% chance of precipitation around 6 PM IST, just before the toss, which could lead to delays or a shortened match duration.
In case of rain interruptions, there is a limited timeframe to complete the game, requiring a minimum of a five-over-a-side contest to produce a result. The match must commence by 10:56 PM IST, with the toss needing to take place by 10:46 PM IST; any delay beyond these timings would render the match inconclusive.
Past experiences reveal that rain has been a recurring issue for the Kolkata Knight Riders, with their previous home fixture against the Punjab Kings last season on April 26 being washed out, resulting in both teams sharing a point each. Similarly, a rain-affected game in Bengaluru last season affected KKR’s playoff prospects, culminating in an eighth-place finish in the standings.
Given the challenges posed by form and weather, Kolkata Knight Riders are hopeful for improved conditions to secure their first win of the season.
