Hyundai Canada has announced a safety recall for select 2024–2026 Elantra Hybrid vehicles over potential fire hazards. The recall impacts 6,082 cars in Canada, as confirmed by Hyundai officials.
Despite no reported incidents in Canada, Hyundai’s spokesperson, Nitish Bissonauth, reassured CBC News via email that there have been no fires, injuries, or fatalities associated with this issue. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) disclosed that 54,337 vehicles are being recalled for the same reason.
The problem stems from a potential fault in the hybrid power control unit of the affected vehicles, which could lead to overheating, according to Hyundai. The NHTSA warns that this could result in a “no start” situation or a mode with reduced power in most instances, potentially escalating to overheating and a fire risk.
Hyundai has pledged to contact all impacted drivers and provide a complimentary software update to rectify the overheating concern.
