This development aligns with Amazon’s recent announcement of its intent to acquire Globalstar, the satellite company that powers Apple’s current satellite features on iPhone 14 and newer models, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 3.
The acquisition deal, pending regulatory approval, is projected to be finalized by 2027. Following this, Apple’s satellite functionalities may operate on Amazon’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network.
Apple’s current satellite features encompass Emergency SOS, Find My, Roadside Assistance, and Messages. These services function in supported regions independent of Wi-Fi or mobile networks and are presently accessible for free. With the forthcoming agreement, Apple and Amazon are anticipated to uphold these existing services, ensuring the continued reliability of critical functions like emergency messaging.
In addition to the existing features, there are speculations about expanded satellite capabilities that could potentially debut with iOS 27. The beta version of the update is anticipated to be introduced in June, with a broader release expected in September.
Presently, Apple’s satellite functionalities primarily cater to emergency scenarios. Users can send SOS messages, share their location via Find My, request roadside assistance, and send basic texts in the absence of a mobile network or Wi-Fi. However, these features are constrained by limited bandwidth, prohibiting media, apps, or full internet access.
The next wave of upgrades under discussion includes the incorporation of 5G connectivity via satellite, likely targeted at future Pro models. This enhancement would also encompass Apple Maps support, the ability to transmit photos via Messages, and the potential for third-party apps to leverage satellite connectivity.
