“British PM’s Aide Resigns Over Epstein Ambassador Controversy”

World"British PM's Aide Resigns Over Epstein Ambassador Controversy"

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s top aide, Morgan McSweeney, has stepped down amidst the controversy surrounding the selection of Peter Mandelson as the U.K.’s ambassador to the United States, despite his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. McSweeney admitted to advising Starmer on the appointment of Mandelson, acknowledging that it was a mistake and taking full responsibility for the decision.

The appointment of Mandelson, 72, as the country’s key diplomatic representative in 2024 has sparked criticism and raised questions about Starmer’s judgment. Recently released documents from the extensive Epstein files in the U.S. suggested that Mandelson may have shared sensitive information with Epstein during his tenure as the U.K. government’s business secretary amid the 2008 financial crisis.

In response to the backlash, Starmer’s administration has pledged to disclose internal communications and other records pertaining to Mandelson’s appointment to demonstrate that Mandelson provided misleading information. Despite being a former cabinet minister and ambassador for the Labour Party, Mandelson has not faced any legal charges.

Following the revelation of new emails by the U.S. Justice Department, Metropolitan Police officers conducted searches at Mandelson’s London residence and another associated property. The ongoing investigation is described as intricate and will necessitate substantial evidence gathering and analysis.

Starmer had previously dismissed Mandelson from his ambassadorial position in September due to prior revelations regarding his ties to Epstein. However, critics argue that the recent email disclosures have raised serious doubts about Starmer’s decision-making abilities, suggesting that he should have exercised better judgment before appointing Mandelson.
