“Rising Digital Fraud Threatens Indian Financial Landscape”

Business"Rising Digital Fraud Threatens Indian Financial Landscape"

In case you’ve been actively using UPI or any digital payment platform, you might have come across a similar narrative. Instances where a purchase was made online but the product never arrived, receiving a call from a bogus bank representative leading to unintended disclosure of sensitive information, or falling prey to a deceptive link resulting in immediate loss of funds.

These occurrences are becoming increasingly common. Recently, an acquaintance encountered a loss of Rs 80,000 while attempting to purchase a smartphone listed on a selling application. Similarly, a friend experienced financial loss while trying to sell an item online last year. The transactions seemed routine until a sudden turn of events.

The landscape of digital fraud is evolving in unforeseen ways. With the rapidity of payments and money transfer, there is minimal time for verification or reconsideration. Moreover, the integration of artificial intelligence enables the creation of authentic-looking messages, personas, and even voices, blurring the lines between the genuine and the fraudulent.

According to the India Fraud Report 2026 by Bureau, a risk intelligence firm collaborating with financial institutions, there has been a notable surge in bank frauds in India, amounting to Rs 36,014 crore in 2024–25, nearly tripling from the previous year. Despite a decrease in reported cases, the financial impact has intensified.

The data unveiled in Parliament highlights a staggering 24 lakh digital fraud cases in India within the initial ten months of 2025, leading to losses exceeding Rs 4,200 crore. These incidents showcase different facets of a shared challenge: high-value bank frauds versus retail digital scams, portraying a trend of reduced occurrences but heightened financial implications.

The shift in fraud dynamics is evident. Formerly prevalent small-scale frauds like OTP scams and phishing schemes are gradually making way for more targeted approaches aimed at larger monetary gains. Notably, there has been a notable increase in loan frauds, emphasizing a transition towards exploiting substantial credit and corporate sectors for illicit gains.
