An explosion at a Vedanta power plant in Chhattisgarh has resulted in the tragic loss of 10 workers’ lives and left more than 30 others injured, some critically, marking one of the state’s most severe industrial incidents in recent memory.
The catastrophe occurred on April 14 in Sakti district during a lunch break, causing widespread panic and necessitating a significant emergency response. Reports confirm that 33 workers were hurt in the explosion, with 23 in critical condition and currently receiving medical care.
The incident was attributed to a hot water pipeline rupture, causing severe burns among on-site workers, contrary to initial speculations of a boiler-related blast. The injured have been hospitalized in nearby Raigarh district, including facilities like OP Jindal Fortis Hospital, where they are under intensive care.
Rescue operations have concluded, with all affected individuals safely evacuated. Authorities are now focusing on determining the exact cause of the tragedy through a comprehensive investigation. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sorrow over the event, ensuring a thorough inquiry and punitive measures against those accountable.
In response, Congress MLA Ram Kumar Yadav protested outside the plant, demanding proper compensation for victims and holding the administration responsible. The plant management acknowledged the incident, emphasizing the provision of top-notch medical aid and cooperation with investigative procedures.
The situation remains critical as officials continue to assess the aftermath and offer support to those affected.
