A British Columbia company is looking to revolutionize agriculture by harnessing the power of seaweed through the establishment of a new biorefinery. Cascadia Seaweed is set to launch a groundbreaking project in Port Edward, situated approximately 15 kilometers east of Prince Rupert, BC. This initiative will involve the conversion of locally cultivated kelp and seaweed into a specialized liquid product known as seaweed-derived biostimulant. Farmers can utilize this product to enhance crop yields and improve resilience to environmental stressors such as drought.
CEO and co-founder Michael Williamson highlighted the nutrient-rich waters off the coast of British Columbia, particularly in the northern region, as ideal for cultivating high-quality seaweed. He emphasized the superior quality of seaweed, emphasizing that it serves as the foundation for valuable products like biostimulants.
The biostimulants, whether applied to the soil or directly onto plants through foliar spray, enhance nutrient absorption efficiency in plants, leading to healthier soil and accelerated plant growth. Williamson noted that this natural approach facilitates faster and more robust plant development.
The new plant in Port Edward is expected to create numerous employment opportunities, ranging from full-time positions to part-time and contract roles, especially during planting and harvesting seasons. The facility, originally designed for fish processing, underwent minimal modifications to transition into a seaweed processing plant, underscoring the seamless integration of operations.
Cascadia Seaweed, established in 2019 on Vancouver Island, has since expanded its operations northward. The strategic location of Port Edward, in close proximity to the Port of Prince Rupert for international shipments and with access to rail lines connecting to the United States, offers logistical advantages for exporting products.
Williamson mentioned that a significant portion of their current product is sold in the United States, particularly in California and the Midwest. The company’s efficient transportation infrastructure and intermodal connectivity will further support market expansion efforts.
With a dedicated team comprising technicians, engineers, harvesters, and scientists, Cascadia Seaweed aims to have the plant fully operational within the next few months, marking a significant milestone in their sustainable agriculture endeavors.
