In the midst of the ongoing tensions involving Israel, the US, and Iran disrupting LPG supplies and causing shortages in India, a community biogas project in a small village in eastern Uttar Pradesh has shielded its residents from the crisis. Ekauni village in Chandauli district has seen about 125 out of nearly 150 families switch to biogas for cooking, sparing them from the LPG scarcity that has led to long queues in many parts of the country.
The residents of Ekauni village now have access to biogas for three hours in the morning and three hours in the evening, meeting their daily cooking requirements. The biogas system, initiated four years ago, has proven invaluable during the current shortage, offering a reliable alternative to traditional LPG.
The transformation began in 2022 when Chandra Prakash Singh, a local resident, established a biogas plant in the village and connected households to it. Little did they know that this initiative would become a lifeline during the nationwide LPG crisis caused by geopolitical tensions.
Local homemaker and biogas user, Kanchan Singh, expressed how crucial the biogas connection has become, allowing families to cook without the hassle of queues and shortages. She highlighted the increased cost of alternatives like induction cooktops, making biogas a more practical choice.
Akhilesh Singh, another resident, emphasized the uninterrupted cooking ensured by the biogas facility despite the LPG crisis. He pointed out that besides being more affordable, costing almost half of LPG, biogas is also highly convenient, saving villagers from the challenges faced by others waiting for cylinders.
The inspiration behind the biogas plant came from Singh’s background. After obtaining his BTech degree from Indore, he decided to work with his father in managing their gaushala. Utilizing the cow dung generated daily, which was previously going to waste, Singh proposed and successfully set up the biogas plant with the support of villagers, providing them with a sustainable and cost-effective fuel source.
Overall, the biogas initiative in Ekauni village stands as a testament to the power of community-driven solutions in mitigating energy crises and ensuring a reliable cooking fuel source for its residents.
