“OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Pro Tier for Codex Users”

Technology"OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Pro Tier for Codex Users"

OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT Pro tier tailored for Codex users at a reduced cost compared to the existing Pro plan. This new tier offers significantly higher usage limits compared to the cheaper ChatGPT Plus plan. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled this tier in response to the soaring demand for Codex.

The announcement coincides with Codex reaching 3 million active users, as OpenAI intensifies its focus on Codex to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Code. The company has adjusted Codex’s usage limits multiple times lately.

Priced at $100 per month in the US and Rs 10,699 in India, the ChatGPT Pro tier is almost half the price of the older Pro plan. It provides 5 times more Codex usage than the Plus plan, catering to users seeking extended and intensive Codex sessions. In comparison, the ChatGPT Plus plan costs $20 per month in the US and Rs 1,999 in India.

The new Pro tier offers all the benefits of the premium Pro plan, with unlimited access to Instant and Thinking models. However, the key distinction lies in the Codex usage limits, where the older Pro plan had 20 times higher limits than ChatGPT Plus, while the new Pro tier offers 5 times more.

Codex head Thibault ‘Tibo’ Sottiaux believes the new plan will suit a wide range of users. OpenAI has also adjusted the ChatGPT Plus limits, hinting at potential reductions. This change aims to enable more sessions over a week rather than long daily sessions.

Amidst competition from Anthropic, OpenAI is emphasizing enterprise tools and Codex to bolster profitability. The company recently shut down its video-generation platform Sora to streamline its focus on core initiatives.
