Doreen Edna Buhler, who passed away at 96, led a challenging yet extraordinary life before her demise. Born on a farm in Calahoo, Alta., she later transitioned to urban life in Edmonton after her father’s death. Following the loss of her husband at 39, Buhler relied on her faith to support her 13 children by working as a baker, pastry chef, and cook in various city kitchens.
Buhler’s legacy continued even after her death as she chose to donate her body to the University of Alberta’s Anatomical Gifts Program. This act allowed future medical professionals to learn from the body that had carried her through her journey. At a commemorative event for anatomical donors at the university, her daughter, Brigid Burton, highlighted her mother’s remarkable nature and the additional chapter she revealed through this selfless act.
The annual memorial event at the university, which honors body donors, saw a large turnout this year. Donor names were acknowledged, and families were presented with yellow roses as a gesture of remembrance. Dr. David Williams, the surgery department chair, expressed gratitude to donor families for upholding their loved ones’ wishes and contributing to the education of numerous medical students annually.
Anatomical donations play a crucial role in various health and research programs at the university, benefiting students in disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, kinesiology, physical therapy, and physical education. The program coordinator, Jason Papirny, emphasized the importance of such donations, noting that they provide a unique learning experience for students and enable research and rare procedure practice opportunities.
Buhler’s family found closure through the memorial event, which marked the end of her time as a donor. Her son, Anthony Buhler, described her as a resilient woman of faith and saw her act of donation as an extension of the generosity and self-sacrifice that defined her life. Following her donation, the family plans to lay her ashes to rest beside her late husband, bringing a sense of finality to this chapter while celebrating her impactful legacy.
