Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh embarked on a three-day visit to Jiribam district, a region heavily impacted by ethnic violence. This journey involved a rare road trip through sensitive areas, covering approximately 217 km from Imphal via National Highway-37. The route traverses Kangpokpi district, predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community, which has been tense since clashes between Meiteis and Kukis erupted in May 2023.
This visit by Singh holds significance as it marks the first road journey undertaken by a Meitei-elected representative to Jiribam since the onset of the ethnic conflict, which has resulted in more than 260 casualties. Security measures were heightened along the route to ensure the safe passage of the Chief Minister and the accompanying convoy of MLAs.
Singh emphasized the importance of community engagement during his interactions in Jiribam, highlighting the warm reception and unity displayed at the Community Interaction Programme. He stressed the need for initiatives that strengthen inter-community bonds and promote a shared vision for a peaceful and progressive society, advocating for more frequent community interaction programs.
The Chief Minister also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services, recognizing the critical role of hospitals in providing equitable access to medical care, especially in emergencies. The outreach program in Jiribam included dialogues with internally displaced persons (IDPs) and leaders from Meitei, Kuki, and Hmar communities, focusing on peace, dialogue, and reconciliation.
As part of a broader trust-building initiative, Singh’s visit aimed to restore confidence among communities affected by the conflict. He engaged with IDPs and community leaders to foster unity and address developmental needs. Singh inspected the Jiribam District Hospital, announcing plans to implement a transfer policy for medical personnel to tackle staffing shortages and improve healthcare services.
The Manipur Chief Minister’s visit came after discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, where the focus was on expediting efforts to restore normalcy and strengthen communal harmony in the region. This visit is seen as a symbolic and strategic move by the government to re-establish connectivity, governance, and trust in one of the Northeastern state’s most sensitive areas.
