The company is introducing a tracking tool on the work computers of its US-based employees to gather real-time data on their device usage. While the aim is to enhance AI systems to be more intuitive in daily tasks, the rollout is causing concern among employees who feel they are being compelled to contribute to tools that could potentially render their roles obsolete.
Internal communications obtained by Business Insider reveal that the new software captures keystrokes, mouse movements, click behaviors, and screen context as employees carry out their tasks. This information is utilized to train AI models to better comprehend human-computer interactions, an area where current systems still face challenges despite their proficiency in coding and research.
The concept, as outlined in the internal announcement, is for AI systems to observe genuine usage patterns to replicate them more effectively. The post stated, “To enable agents to grasp how individuals perform daily tasks using computers, we must train our models with authentic examples.” Consequently, Meta employees are integral to the training process, often without the option to opt-out, sparking tension within the workforce.
Internally, the response has been less than enthusiastic. One of the highly supported reactions to the announcement reportedly expressed discomfort, questioning how employees could opt-out. This query quickly became a focal point of discussion, particularly as employees realized there was no apparent way to decline participation.
Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, responded directly in the discussion, confirming that opting out is not feasible on company devices. His response triggered various reactions, including shocked, crying, and angry emojis, indicating the underlying discomfort within the company.
Meta asserts that the system is being implemented responsibly, with safeguards in place to prevent misuse, and clarifies that the collected data will solely be used to improve AI models.
