In the film “The Day After Tomorrow,” global weather patterns are thrown into disarray due to the sudden shutdown of a critical Atlantic Ocean current. The storyline features devastating tornadoes in Los Angeles, a surge in sea levels leading to the destruction of coastal New York, and a deep freeze engulfing large parts of the Northern Hemisphere, causing immediate fatalities.

While the movie serves as a notable example of climate fiction, known as cli-fi, it is loosely inspired by actual scientific principles that researchers are taking seriously. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a key ocean conveyor belt that redistributes water worldwide by transporting warm water from the southern Atlantic to the north, where it cools and sinks. This process plays a crucial role in moderating Europe’s climate compared to regions at similar latitudes in Canada.

Concerns have arisen regarding the potential collapse of the AMOC, similar to the movie’s premise. Although the film exaggerates the consequences, scientists warn of significant real-world impacts such as rising sea levels and colder temperatures in Europe, albeit less severe than depicted on screen.

The primary worry among scientists is the impact of climate change on the AMOC. The continuous release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere leads to rising global temperatures, subsequently affecting ocean temperatures and the functioning of the AMOC.

As the Atlantic’s surface temperatures increase and certain areas become less saline, the water’s ability to sink is compromised. Additionally, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet contributes freshwater to the ocean, further disrupting the AMOC’s circulation patterns.

Research indicates conflicting views on the extent of the AMOC slowdown. Studies have suggested varying timelines for a potential shutdown by the end of the century, with estimates ranging from a 30% slowdown to as much as a 50% reduction by 2100.

Experts emphasize the real-world implications of a weakened AMOC, including altered weather patterns, potential sea level rise, and geopolitical repercussions as populations may be forced to migrate due to changing conditions. While not as catastrophic as portrayed in fiction, the projected impacts underscore the urgency of addressing climate change to mitigate future risks.
