Congress MP Shashi Tharoor criticized Pakistan’s role in the US-Iran peace talks held in Islamabad, implying that it reflects a unique relationship with Washington and specific regional interests. Tharoor sarcastically highlighted that only Pakistan seems capable of playing such a diplomatic role with the US.
Questioning the authenticity of a recent social media post by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to US President Donald Trump, Tharoor suggested potential Washington involvement based on the post’s wording and structure. He insinuated that the coordination seen indicates a distinctive diplomatic engagement exclusive to Pakistan and the US.
Tharoor referenced a New York Times report supporting his claim that Sharif’s plea to Trump for an Iran deadline extension was premeditated and endorsed by the White House before being publicized. The report hinted at extensive behind-the-scenes diplomatic coordination beyond public perception.
The Congress MP emphasized that India should not perceive Pakistan’s role in the talks as a competition but instead prioritize regional peace and stability, irrespective of the facilitator. Tharoor highlighted the contrasting stakes between Pakistan and India in the conflict, citing Pakistan’s geographic proximity to Iran and significant Shia population as key factors influencing its involvement.
Regarding Pakistan’s mediation efforts, Tharoor stressed the importance of credible action against terrorism to gain international trust. He emphasized that dismantling terrorist infrastructure and addressing extremist elements are crucial steps for Islamabad to establish genuine credibility.
