The union representing WestJet flight attendants has disclosed the details of the recent tentative agreement with the Calgary-based airline following a brief strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced that the deal encompasses an 18% wage increase spread over three years, along with a new provision for a “duty period premium” to compensate for ground duties. Additionally, the agreement includes extended time off, enhanced food and uniform allowances, among other benefits.
During a holiday weekend, WestJet flights across a significant portion of Canada were grounded in anticipation of a strike by 4,400 flight attendants who initiated a walkout early on a Sunday. However, a tentative agreement was swiftly reached between the airline and the union on Monday morning, leading to a gradual resumption of WestJet operations.
The next step involves cabin crew members voting on the proposed deal in the upcoming weeks.
