Meta, under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, has assembled a team of top AI researchers to enhance user engagement on its social media platforms, Instagram and Facebook. The new unit, known as MRS Research, is focused on refining the recommendation system that dictates users’ feed content.
Yang Song, a former TikTok executive who joined Meta in November, leads the MRS Research team. The team’s primary objective is to incorporate AI technology to boost user interaction across Meta’s platforms and improve the recommendation engine. By collaborating with Meta’s advertising division, MRS Research aims to enhance ad performance by delivering more personalized ads to users.
This initiative follows Meta’s internal restructuring within the Recommendation Systems division, consolidating top AI talent into a unified team. Notably, MRS Research has attracted skilled professionals from renowned tech companies like OpenAI, Google, and Amazon.
As part of Meta’s broader AI strategy, employees are encouraged to utilize more AI tools, with even Mark Zuckerberg reportedly leveraging an AI CEO agent for task management. Recently, Meta acquired Moltbook, an AI-driven social media platform that prohibits human posts, signaling the company’s focus on developing agentic AI. Additionally, Meta has acquired other AI startups like Manus AI and brought onboard the founding team of Dreamer.
While Meta continues to invest heavily in AI advancements, rumors suggest a significant round of layoffs may affect over 15,000 employees. Despite recent layoffs and restructuring, the company has introduced lucrative incentives for top executives, offering substantial rewards if Meta achieves a $9 trillion valuation.
